Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) Update

Okay y’all, less than a year ago I shared about how I started at OTF and it is only fair to give you an update on my experience and membership there. I fell off the map for a while there and this is long overdue but it’s better late than never! Right?! 😀

You see, what had happened was…

I actually ended up canceling my membership after two months. Still had to pay for the 3rd month because of the 30 day prior cancellation policy- which I was aware of from the very beginning. Timeliness in cancellation is of the essence but when life happens, it happens.

Reasons:

Class times

Although I made it work for the length of my time there, class times were not convenient to my schedule. I had 5 hours from when I dropped my kids off at school til pick-up time. My days were looking like this:

  • 9 AM Drop off
  • 10 AM OTF class begins
  • 11:30 AM (approx.) leaving OTF premises
  • 11:40 AM – 12:30 PM Lunch (drive time included)
  • 12:30 PM- 1:30 PM- Knock off an errand or two
  • 1:35 PM Making my way back for pick-up and BAM! there went the childless portion of my day.

Personal reasons

About halfway through my 2-month OTF journey, one of my loved ones was overcome by something difficult and life-changing. It affected me in ways I still can’t find the words to explain. One thing I know for certain is that I wanted to be there for my loved one as much as possible.

Ankles and knees

Something about the treadmill incline and the rowing machine had them SCREAMING. I took a 1-week (3 workout day) break and started going only 2 days/week doing no incline, slower speed, and slower on the rower (I’m a rhyming beast, what can I say?). Ultimately, once the screaming commenced it never fully went away until almost a month after my last class.

Side Note: Taking it easy on the treadmill & rower upon returning wasn’t helping me with the Splat points. The goal is to get 12 Splat points/session to achieve EPOC AKA afterburn, majority of which I earned on the treadmill+rower. Some days I’d push my aching joints for the sake of getting those 12 points. Not smart-I know! Deciding between almost no intensity + less splat points (good for joints no afterburn) and increased intensity + 12 splat points (bad for joints good for afterburn) is basically a lose-lose situation.

 

Bottom Line:

I like the concept. I like the facility. The music. The restrooms are hyper clean and stocked up with essentials like hair ties, bobby pins, pads, hair dryer, etc. The staff is friendly and welcoming. The coaches are encouraging and help you correct your form. The workouts were effective, it is a total body workout and you will feel it.

The cancellation was made upon coming to the conclusion that membership was not feasible given the circumstances in my life at that time.

I want to be clear that I never did have any negative experiences at the facility, with the coaches, or other class goers. It’s a great place, definitely check it out and give it a try. The first class is free, find one near you & call them to schedule!
